Royal FloraHolland supports the innovative Stella Juva
Yesterday, students from the Solar Team Eindhoven unveiled the Stella Juva: the world’s first ambulance that runs entirely on solar power and is capable of providing medical care to people in remote areas. As a sponsor, Royal FloraHolland supports this remarkable initiative because it combines social impact, innovation and sustainability, in line with the organisation’s international cooperation.
The Solar Team at Eindhoven University of Technology developed the Stella Juva to demonstrate that medical assistance can be made available in places where access to healthcare, fuel or reliable infrastructure is not a given. Thanks to solar power, the ambulance can operate independently and provide assistance where it is most urgently needed.
The power of connection
David van Mechelen, CFO of sponsor Royal FloraHolland, was an enthusiastic spectator at the presentation: “This initiative shows how innovation, sustainability and social impact go hand in hand. That is what we stand for as an international co-operative of flower and plant growers. For example, we have many members in Africa who run their businesses there, for whom it is important that their employees have access to good healthcare. The Stella Juva demonstrates how that same innovative drive and collaboration can soon make a difference in the areas of better healthcare and living conditions.”
Trial phase in Kenya
Next month, Solar Team Eindhoven will travel to Kenya together with the health organisation Amref Health Africa. This holds special significance for Royal FloraHolland. Kenya is a key production region for the international floriculture sector, where many of our members are also active. Around 100,000 people work on nurseries in the country, which also play an important social role, including through initiatives in the fields of education and healthcare. In Kenya, the Stella Juva is being tested under realistic conditions, with the aim of investigating how the solar-powered ambulance can contribute to better and more sustainable healthcare in remote areas. It is an example of the impact of collaboration, sustainability and social engagement. That is why Royal FloraHolland is proud to support this initiative.
