During the Glazen Tulp Award ceremony, the most innovative products in the ornamental horticulture sector were celebrated. In the category of Flowering Indoor Plants, three entries stood out for their originality, design, and market impact. The first prize was awarded to a striking pineapple plant from Stofbergen, which is not only visually unique but also encourages sharing and connection. Schoneveld Breeding and Opti-Flora also demonstrated how innovation continues to enrich the sector.

Stofbergen wins Glazen Tulp Award with unique pineapple plant

Stofbergen won both the jury and public awards with a remarkable pineapple plant that bears no fruit. What makes this plant special are the baby plants growing around the crown, which can be easily propagated and shared. “It’s a plant that invites connection,” said Ed Stofbergen.

An unexpected discovery with deep meaning

The plant was discovered during the breeding of regular pineapples and immediately stood out due to its unusual shape. A Chinese grower added symbolic meaning to the plant, representing generations: grandparent, mother, and grandchildren. Thanks to enthusiastic responses from customers and retailers, the plant was quickly brought to market.

Innovation and inspiration from father

Stofbergen sees innovation as a core value and encourages others to keep looking ahead. “We want to continuously surprise our customers with what nature has to offer. This award is especially meaningful because it’s our own development, inspired by my father.”

Schoneveld breeding takes second place with Illusia

Second prize went to Schoneveld Breeding for Illusia, a flowering indoor plant that stands out with its expressive bloom shape. The petals appear to look back at you, giving it a graceful and unique appearance. The variety originated from an unusual find during breeding trials and was developed over eight years into a technically refined plant with strong ornamental value. “This award is a recognition for everyone in the chain, from breeder to retail partner,” said Schoneveld. “Illusia offers growers exclusivity and helps advance the sector through innovation and distinctiveness.” The ornamental horticulture sector thrives on innovation; it’s this constant evolution that keeps the market dynamic. As we often say: “Let’s predict the future by creating it.”

Opti-flor impresses with Freedanzo Dove

Opti-flor secured third place with Freedanzo Dove, an orchid distinguished by its playful growth and impressive flowering with more than 75 blooms. The plant fits perfectly with the jungle trend and especially appeals to younger consumers. Selecting this variety required years of intensive testing. “This award confirms that we’re on the right track,” said Tim van Leeuwen, Marketing Manager at Opti-flor. The market launch is supported through presentations at wholesalers and collaborations with trade partners.
