Cut Flowers with Character: What Makes These Innovators Stand Out?
October 24, 2025
The Glazen Tulp Award annually highlights the most innovative products in the ornamental horticulture sector. In the Cut Flowers category, the professional jury selected three remarkable innovations, each contributing to the future of the industry in its own unique way. From sustainable cultivation to striking design, these winners show that innovation is in full bloom.
Kwekerij Stadsland Wins Jury Prize with Sustainable Campanula ‘Kilimanjaro’
The jury’s first prize was awarded to Kwekerij Stadsland for Kilimanjaro, a fully double-flowered Campanula that can be grown without added energy or chemicals and is more resilient. “We’re driven to give underrepresented crops a platform and to surprise people,” says Fiona Koning, co-owner of Kwekerij Stadsland.
Collaboration
“There are still many untapped traits in the Campanulaceae family, and we saw an opportunity there. After four years, we had a moment of doubt and gave ourselves one more year. In the fifth year, we figured out how to collaborate with the crop and saw its potential,” Fiona explains. The flower is not only elegant but also a model of responsible cultivation. “This award is a crowning achievement of the collaboration with my father—without each other, it wouldn’t have been possible.”
Looking Ahead
Fiona: “There’s still so much room for innovation. Still, I worry about the increasing focus on mass production, which could lead to a narrowing of the assortment. My advice is to seek out like-minded people and enjoy pioneering together. It’s hard work, but also a lot of fun! We’re passionate about bringing more diversity to consumers in harmony with nature. It’s wonderful that the jury appreciates this.”
Qualily Wins Second Prize and Public Choice Award with Fragrant-Free, Double Lily
Qualily won both the second prize and the public choice award with a unique lily: fragrance-free, double-flowered, and pollen-free. The flower has a full shape and striking color, making a single stem a true eye-catcher in any bouquet. “We dared to invest in this test bulb, and despite its cultivation challenges, we found a way to make it work,” says Raymond Vijverberg. Innovation remains a key focus both internally and externally. Service, the right varieties, and sustainability are becoming increasingly important. The lily was promoted through the Surprice Selections line and immediately resonated with consumers. “This award is a recognition of our commitment to improvement and innovation.”
Firma P. Spruit & Zoon Innovates with the Unique Tulipa Ad Rem Parrot
The third prize went to Firma P. Spruit & Zoon for Tulipa Ad Rem Parrot, a striking mutant within the Ad Rem tulip variety. This parrot tulip stands out with its bold, dramatic appearance and vibrant colors. The flower combines ornamental value with character and offers florists a distinctive novelty for eye-catching bouquets. “We’re proud that this special tulip is being recognized. It encourages us to keep exploring variation and expression within the tulip assortment.”
Where to Admire Them
All innovative products from the winners and other finalists can be viewed online at the Glazen Tulp Award. These new market introductions from all finalists can also be admired in person at the Trade Fair Aalsmeer (November 4–6) in the Novilty greenhouse.
