The Royal FloraHolland Sustainability Award focuses on initiatives that contribute to a future-proof floriculture sector, based on the three ESG pillars: Environmental, Social, and Governance. The professional jury plays a crucial role in this: they guarantee the quality, independence, and credibility of the award.

Any member-supplier of Royal FloraHolland with a sustainable innovation can apply. Small or large, every initiative counts. You can also apply together with your supplier or partner in the chain.

Conditions for innovation:

  • For this award, we are looking for innovations that contribute to a more sustainable floriculture. These can be product innovations, such as environmentally friendly packaging or products that contribute to added value for people and the environment. Business or process innovations are also eligible. Examples include smarter use of water and energy, less waste, better working conditions, or the use of new technologies in cultivation or business operations. The examples mentioned are illustrative and not exhaustive – all ideas that contribute to a more sustainable and future-proof sector are welcome.
  • The innovation must have demonstrably appeared on the market or been put into practical use by the deadline for registration (August 31, 2025).
  • The innovation must not be more than two years old at the time of registration.
  • Each participant may submit multiple product or business innovations, but only one product or business innovation per participant may be nominated.

Assessment procedure

  • You can register as a member until August 31.
  • All entries will be judged by the jury, which will select five nominees.
  • The nominees will be invited to give a personal presentation to the jury. The jury will then cast their votes. The jury's votes account for 70% of the final score.
  • The public will vote in October. The public's votes account for 30% of the final score.
  • The winners will be announced during a special event at the Trade Fair in Aalsmeer.

Evaluation criteria

We use fixed assessment criteria to evaluate the RFH Sustainability Award. In the application form, you can indicate how your innovation meets each criterion.

The following assessment criteria have been established.

1. Originality of the innovation

How innovative or original is your product or business innovation? Does it offer a unique solution within the sector?

2. Practical applicability

To what extent is the sustainable innovation practically applicable within the floriculture sector? We look at technical feasibility and cost aspects for larger-scale use.

3. Demonstrable positive impact on the environment (E)

What is the environmental performance of the sustainable innovation? We look at the concrete measures and results that contribute to a positive impact on the environment, such as CO2 reduction.

4. Demonstrable positive social impact (S)

What is the social impact of the sustainable innovation? We look at, for example, the grower's contribution to better working conditions and initiatives that benefit the (local) community.

5. Governance: Transparency / reporting efforts (G)

How do you make your sustainability efforts visible, for example through certifications obtained?

6. Storytelling & marketing efforts

What is the story behind the sustainable innovation? We also look at the creativity and effectiveness of the marketing efforts.
