Photo guidelines for plants

Good photos make your lot more attractive for a continuously expanding market. We are selling more and more at digital auctions. One of the preconditions for this is good product photos that are representative of the lot to be auctioned.

What is a representative photo?

A photo is representative when what is pictured on it is identical to what is being auctioned. This could concern:

  • Colour(s) and composition.
  • Sales unit/packaging.
  • Number of items per package.
  • Whether individual packaging is visible (with or without sleeve).
  • Stage of maturity at the time of auctioning.

General rules

Your photos must comply with the following general rules:

  • If the plant is wider than it is tall, supply a landscape photo.
  • If the plant is taller than it is wide, supply a portrait photo.
  • Background and base have the same colour and are white or light grey. For white or pastel flowers, always choose light grey.
  • The plants occupy about 2/3 of the photo and are located in the middle.
  • The photo is not too dark. Ensure there is sufficient (day)light.
  • It is a JPEG format.
  • The maximum photo file is 5 MB.

Plants in a package

If you take pictures of plants in a package, the following also applies:

  • Tip the tray or box forwards so the plants at the front and the back are visible.
  • Place one plant to the left of the tray (if the plant is supplied in a sleeve, then this plant should be without a sleeve).

These guidelines also apply for decorative articles.

When taking photos of plants without a package, the following rules apply:

  • Place one plant to the left of the tray (if the plant is supplied in a sleeve, then this plant should be without a sleeve).
  • Place a ruler to the left of the plant.

  • Take a clear photo of the range in the mixture (all of the different colours, types or cultivars).

Plants on mixed trolleys/mix per shelf

These photo guidelines also apply to decorative articles and arrangements. When taking photos of plants on mixed trolleys or mix per shelf, the following additional rules apply:

  • A clear photo of the trolley, showing how it is loaded.
  • The photographed trolley should fill the frame.
  • A photo of a shelf must be of the top shelf, to give a better overview of the product.
  • A clear photo of the range in the mixture (colours, types of cultivars).
  • Photograph the assortment in the same way as the distribution on the shelf. For example: from left to right and from front to back.

A mixed trolley can consist of different products on each shelf, or each shelf can have a different product. The photos of these mixed trolleys can be supplied in the following ways:
