Milestone for FloriPEFCR environmental footprint method
September 29, 2023

On Friday 29 September 2023, the definitive version of FloriPEFCR was submitted to the European Commission. FloriPEFCR allows Europeans to calculate, compare and monitor the environmental impact of cut flowers or potted plants using a standard independent calculation method. In adopting this method, we are jointly reducing the environmental footprint of the sector and working together to increase trust and transparency.
We expect the European Commission to endorse FloriPEFCR by the end of this year and subsequently publish it on the European Commission website. This represents an important step in the implementation of FloriPEFCR, the new standard method for environmental footprint calculations.
Consumers and trade across Europe increasingly demand demonstrably sustainably grown flowers and plants. As such, the reliability and transparency of our platform are absolutely essential for the sector's reputation. This should be a place where growers and buyers come together and do business with peace of mind.
The EU has been in need of a recognised standardised method for measuring environmental footprint. A consortium of companies and international sector organisations, such as Floriculture Sustainability Initiative, Union Fleurs, MPS, Florverde, Natuur & Milieu, Blonk Consultants, PRé Sustainability and Royal FloraHolland, led by Wageningen University & Research, therefore set to work on drafting European calculation rules for determining the environmental footprint of ornamental plants or flowers.
Benefits of FloriPEFCR
FloriPEFCR gives the sector a standard calculation method, which provides insight and opportunities to reduce environmental impact. It also benefits the sector in a number of ways. For example, there is clarity and growers can use this method to see exactly where the environmental impact of their product is occurring and subsequently reduce the impact of their own footprint in a targeted way. Growers will also gain insight into how they are doing compared to other growers with the same assortment.
The FloriPEFCR provides a basis for verified and reliable sustainability claims and prevents companies from pretending to be more sustainable or socially responsible than a company or organization actually is (greenwashing).
How does the FloriPEFCR method work?
It is a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) based method and contains clear standard calculation rules for 16 environmental impact categories. Among the 16 impact categories are climate, land use and fossil resource depletion. This method calculates the environmental impact of a product stem or pot, from the extraction of raw materials to the end of the product’s life cycle.
The consortium expects the final version of the FloriPEFCR to be posted on the European Commission's website by the end of January 2024. This will be followed by a process to approve the tools that make FloriPEFCR easier to use.
