Auctioneers' Column: Spring optimism at the Auction

March 27, 2026

Erik Boland mrt 2026

Auctioneer Erik Boland sees it every year: as Easter approaches, the atmosphere at the auction changes and the colour yellow pops up everywhere. In this column, he explains how Easter colours the market, what he observed during his visit to Danish growers, and why auction prices are finally rising again. Spring brings not only light, but also new opportunities for growers and buyers.

Easter is just around the corner, which means the colour yellow is back in full swing. Yellow suits spring and cheerful bulbs well. For florists and wholesalers, it’s a real must-have to capture the Easter spirit. You see it everywhere: from bright yellow daffodils to eye-catching arrangements featuring Easter eggs or Easter bunnies.

Yellow symbolises hope and renewal, exactly the feeling with which spring greets us. If you use this colour effectively in bouquets and floral arrangements, you nicely convey the cheerfulness of Easter. This attracts consumers who want to brighten up their homes.

Visit to growers in Denmark: digitalisation on the rise

I recently visited several growers in Denmark. What immediately struck me was the growing interest in Floriday. This digital marketplace for the flower and plant industry is gaining a firm foothold. Growers want better insight into their processes and are increasingly willing to work digitally. Buyers are also switching to Floriday more often. This shows that the sector is ready for even more digitalisation. It not only makes work smarter but also helps reduce waste and organise the supply chain more efficiently.

Yet I also heard concerns. High energy costs are still weighing heavily on many businesses. The first two months of this year, with temperatures around minus 15 degrees, have cost a great deal of money. For many growers, the search for ways to work more energy-efficiently continues. It is therefore becoming increasingly important that we, as a sector, collaborate on efficient energy solutions. This not only helps growers but also contributes to a sustainable future for the entire flower and plant sector.

Auction prices on the rise again

In recent weeks, I’ve finally seen a positive trend at the auction. Plants fetched good prices. Thanks to the spring weather, demand clearly increased, giving the sector a significant boost. Auction prices regularly exceeded the pre-auction prices.

Thanks to strong demand and good supply, growers have been able to achieve better results in recent weeks. This gives us a great deal of confidence for the coming months. As an auctioneer, I regularly came away from the clock in high spirits, having helped buyers secure their purchases while achieving good prices for the growers.

With spring on the horizon, I hope this positive trend continues. If the sector can maintain this upward trajectory, we have a great season ahead of us.
