Composition of the Members' Council

The Council of Members is a reflection of our members. In order for the Council of Members to function properly, we need input from our members. Therefore, you can always reach out to the Members' Council.

How the inflow and outflow of the Members' Council work

The Royal FloraHolland Members' Council consists of 35 to 45 members and reflects the membership base. To retain knowledge and experience within the Members' Council and make room for new members, we operate with fixed terms of appointment and a rotation schedule.

Terms of Appointment
Members of the Members' Council are appointed for a four-year term. Afterward, they may be reappointed once for another four years.
In exceptional circumstances, an additional extension of two consecutive two-year terms is possible. This occurs only when there is a valid reason and continuity within the Members' Council requires it.

Role of the Nomination Committee
The Nomination Committee oversees the recruitment, selection, and nomination of candidates for (re)appointments to the Members' Council. The committee assesses whether candidates meet the established criteria and ensures that the composition of the Members' Council continues to accurately reflect the cooperative.

In the case of a request for an extended reappointment, the Nomination Committee assesses whether an exceptional situation exists and whether there is sufficient justification to nominate someone for this.

Rotation Schedule
To prevent a large number of members from leaving at the same time, the Members' Council operates a rotation schedule. This ensures that the inflow and outgoing employees are evenly distributed over the years.

According to this schedule:

  • members are nominated annually for reappointment to a new four-year term;
  • in exceptional cases, members may be nominated for an extended reappointment of two years;
  • members step down according to the rotation schedule.

Members of the Members’ Council may also choose to resign from their position before the end of their term.

How does the appointment process work?
In the fall, members can vote for new candidates. Candidates are appointed when a majority of the votes cast are in favor of their appointment. The new Members’ Council members are officially announced during the Members’ Meeting on Cooperative Day.
