What is Royal FloraHolland's new approach to digital environmental registration and certification? What will happen in the coming time?
Royal FloraHolland encourages digital environmental registration and certification by guiding growers and making participation easier (instead of working with sanctions as in the past). We will do so primarily in the following two ways:
- Royal FloraHolland makes use of the knowledge and skills of groups of growers through the FloraHolland Product Committees (FPCs). Together with the FPCs, we are exploring how a significant increase can be achieved in the number of suppliers that carry out digital environmental registration and have an environmental certificate. We are developing a tailor-made approach, because each group of growers has to deal with specific circumstances. Growers of seasonal flowers face different issues than growers of roses and this approach allows us to take this into account.
- We will continue to make efforts to arrive at a very broadly expressed trade commitment and to make this concrete and measurable. We are referring to the willingness of the trade to buy only certified flowers and plants, because we fully understand that this is a precondition for growers to take action.
Does the Members' Council support this (new) approach?
The Council of Members gave advice to the management of Royal FloraHolland in June 2021, and thereafter the management has made a decision that was presented as a new approach on 1 September 2021.
Could I still be penalised or excluded from the marketplace if I haven’t started with digital environmental registration and certification yet?
No. In the new approach, the Management Board of Royal FloraHolland has decided not to impose sanctions in the form of fines or exclusion from the marketplace for the time being. This applies to both digital environmental registration and certification.
What is meant by ‘the time being’? What will happen at the end of 2022?
Until the end of 2022, Royal FloraHolland will encourage the implementation of environmental registration and certification by guiding growers and making participation easier. In the meantime, we are closely monitoring progress and an evaluation will take place at the end of 2022, after which it will be decided whether adjustments are necessary. We will keep you posted.
I recently started with digital environmental registration, should I stop now that there is no enforcement and sanctions are no longer imposed?
No. We will continue to ask our suppliers to start and continue with digital environmental registration and certification. Despite enforcement being postponed until the end of 2022, digital environmental registration and environmental certification remains essential for the future of your company, our industry and our marketplace.
I am a supplier, but not a grower. Does environmental registration and certification apply to me?
Do you not grow the products that you supply yourself (trading companies, ‘re-auctioneers’, makers of arrangements, etc.)? We do not ask that you carry out environmental registration; we do ask you to prove that the products you supply are environmentally certified. We also ask growers who buy from other growers to prove that the products offered on the marketplace originate from certified growers.

The digital environmental registration and certification is now part of the sustainability regulations associated with Royal FloraHolland’s Auction Regulations. This means that these rules will automatically apply to all Royal FloraHolland growers selling at VRM, regardless of which percentage of their supply they sell at VRM. Therefore, Royal FloraHolland growers who supply 100% of their supply at VRM will also fall under the Royal FloraHolland regulations.

How can I show that I am certified as a grower on the Royal FloraHolland marketplace?
We display the certificates held by growers in several locations on our marketplace, such as in the KOA supply, at the Auction, on the grower page in Floriday and in Flora Mondo. This information is verified by the party issuing the certificate. In this way, growers can indicate the sustainability of the production of their products, and buyers can include certificates in their selection/search criteria and thus find supply from certified growers quickly and efficiently.
Wat is er met de stoppersregeling voor digitale milieuregistratie en milieucertificering gebeurd?
De stoppersregeling die in 2020 in het leven is geroepen door Royal FloraHolland, speciaal voor aanvoerders die nog niet zijn gestart waren met digitale milieuregistratie en die van plan waren om binnen enkele jaren te stoppen met hun bedrijf, is komen te vervallen in maart 2021 toen de directie van Royal FloraHolland besloot voorlopig niet te handhaven en sanctioneren op digitale milieuregistratie- en milieucertificering.
Door het directiebesluit kregen alle aanvoerders die nog niet waren gestart met digitale milieuregistratie geen sancties meer opgelegd, en daarmee kwam het nut van de stoppersregeling te vervallen, omdat er geen uitzonderingen meer gemaakt hoefden te worden. Kortom, de stoppersregeling was niet meer relevant en werd stopgezet.
Alle aanvoerders die toentertijd hadden aangegeven van de stoppersregeling gebruik te willen maken, zijn hiervan op de hoogte gesteld door ons per email eind maart 2021. In de praktijk veranderde er voor hen niets, omdat ze van een uitzonderingspositie ten opzichte van sancties overgingen naar een situatie zonder sancties voor alle aanvoerders.
Ook voor aanvoerders die aangaven dan toch door te willen gaan met aanvoeren, veranderde er niets, en zij hoefden dit ook niet door te geven aan Royal FloraHolland.
