GMM 1 June 2017: let's do it together!02 June 2017
The atmosphere at the General Members' Meeting held last night was warm. Not because of the temperature outside, but because of the openness of all the members. Some have known each other for years, others are attending for the first time, such as Christian from Ooster Premium-Plants in Germany. He came to add his vote on the important issues affecting our cooperative at the moment. And to meet Lucas Vos in real life.
The attendees last night reflected the range of our members well. On the one hand, there was the older generation of growers, who are full of knowledge and passion. And have a rich history with Royal FloraHolland. On the other hand, there were the young, driven and inspired entrepreneurs who want to work for many more years to come in the horticultural sector. How do they together view the future and the role of the cooperative?
Remain a global marketplace
"Digitisation is happening too slowly." The owner of Easygrow said this with a smile, but it is a serious concern. His partner agreed. "The lines need to be shorter, but we realise that's not an easy task. Royal FloraHolland must retain its number 1 position and press ahead with digitisation before someone else does it."
What is the right course to take?
During the AOB, concerns were expressed. Are we investing too much in digitisation while not knowing if that is the right step for us? Lucas replied, "For digitisation we have a goal. It is a dot on the horizon at this point. To get there, we need to invest. We cannot stand still and wait to see what happens. That dot also symbolises an end. We have to put behind us the things that have made us great. We need to think not just of the situation now, but of how we can ensure that together we shall remain a global marketplace. After all, we have the knowledge, the good products and the network!"
Try a Members' Council?
Chair Jack Goossens put forward the suggestion of already conducting a "dry run" with a Members' Council-type model. "Change means setting a goal together as a dot on the horizon and then taking the resolute steps required to get there," is how he put it. The idea certainly got tongues wagging after the meeting ended!
