Members talk to members online: “We are a kind of pressure relief”08 April 2020
Wim Koolhaas, bromeliads grower, sits on the Member Council's Members’ Engagement Committee. How do you keep things together in times of crisis?
"Members' emotions run high. The impact of the crises increases. That is why we started with video conversations: 'Members talk to Members online'. We do that a couple of times a week with a group of members. By getting in touch with each other, people can say what is on their mind and share experiences. We are a kind of pressure relief moment. Especially for the emotional part because lots of money is at stake. And that goes for everyone. We share an awful lot of information with our members right now. Is that having the right impact? Does it really help? And we pick up a lot: what's going on with our members?"
"We've had about ten sessions now, nationally and internationally. It was a bit of a search at first. Because in which subjects do you find each other? The diversity in our club is simply enormous. Big growers, small growers, national and international. At the auction clock, the supply regulation plays a role. In direct trade, the trade flows have disappeared and growers themselves must balance supply and demand. At the start, we talked a lot about supply regulation. Based on those signals, we started talking with the FPCs. My own product group is starting to take off now and I hear the same from other FPCs. The auctioneers provide customized supply regulation and coordinate that with the FPCs. Members find each other online and in Whatsapp groups. If that is not happening yet and you need support for your product group, please let us know."
"We now do the 'Members talk to Members' online video conversations by region. That makes sense. We can go a little deeper, focus on cross product issues and get more targeted information. That is still important, so we are going to keep doing it. We are also preparing a new round of members' sessions, which we unfortunately had to cancel in March. Everything will be digital because meeting each other physically is not possible. This way we will make sure that we stay in touch with each other. And that is exactly what is so important for our cooperative: everyone must continue to participate!
