Rentier from Drenthe with Delphinium
André Westendorp from Klijndijk (Drenthe) and his wife Dorien cultivate and breed Delphinium and Helleborus. “My wife and I had a florist shop, but in 2000 we decided to change course and exchange the shop for a nursery.
The florist shop was getting too big for us; we no longer had fun running it. That is why we bought two hectares of ground in November of that year. The next month, we closed the shop and started cultivating Delphiniums. Later we added Helleborus. We have never regretted taking that step."
"I feel that our trolleys must stand out when buyers are examining the supply at the auction. To draw attention to our flowers, I utilise social media. Every day, I share photos of our flowers, because that is how to convince customers to buy them. We also promote our flowers with a printed sleeve, a label on each bunch and a flyer describing all of our varieties. Buyers can sign up to receive a daily e-mail about what we shall be supplying the next day. But the most important element of promotion is naturally the product itself. It simply has to be good. The buyer must be able to trust us implicitly."
"We sell everything at the clock auction. We believe that we get the most honest price that way. We are a small company that supplies small quantities, which is perfect for the clock. Physically and digitally; we also use FloraMondo. Our flowers are always accompanied by photos. We were one of the first summer-flower growers to do so. Now it is mandatory, which I find a good thing. Certainly with Remote Buying, buyers do not want a stock photo of the product."
"I am very proud of our Kissi-series that developed from our own breeding programme. We were not entirely satisfied with the available varieties, so we collected seeds and planted them. This led to the development of new varieties with more intense colours, longer vase life, stronger stems and less susceptible to mould. We like them better, but ultimately it's the customer who decides what they like and want to buy. The series is named in honour of my brother and his family. In 2000 he died along with his wife and three children. My sister-in-law always called her youngest daughter Kissi, short for Kirsten, so that became the name of this series."
"We do not need to be the biggest nursery, but we do want to be among the best growers. That is our dream. It's quite a goal, because we do it all ourselves, just the two of us. Originally, we came from Twello (Gelderland), but now we have found our place in Drenthe. We sometimes say in jest that we are now rentiers from Drenthe."
