Auctioneer's column: Spring bursts onto the clock

March 13, 2026

Bart Zomerdijk mrt 2026

Auctioneer Bart Zomerdijk sees first-hand how busy the auction clock during this time of year. International Women's Day, English Mother's Day and the start of spring all contribute to a lively, colourful market. In this column, he shares his perspective on the supply of spring products, the preparations for upcoming holidays and the moments when the sector truly shows its best side.

The past few weeks revolved around International Women's Day and English Mother's Day. Two important moments for our sector. Purchases focused on roses, tulips, chrysanthemums, lisianthus and many other spring products. The market felt lively, with strong demand and healthy volumes across various export markets. A lot of work has been done together, and I hope that we’ve helped make many people happy with a bouquet full of love and appreciation.

Spring is showing itself on the clock

In the coming weeks, we’ll really feel the transition to spring. For me, as the auctioneer of a diverse clock, this is one of the most beautiful periods of the year. Seasonal flowers are clearly coming back into focus.

Tulips will remain dominant for a while, but daffodils, hyacinths, ranunculus and anemones will also reach their peak. Flowering shrubs such as Spiraea, Forsythia, Magnolia and Salix bring the first real colours of spring. In addition to this, the first outdoor plants and garden bedding plants are ready for what is traditionally a busy period. With the first rays of sunshine, people will soon return to their gardens.

This is also the start of the holiday season, with non- and early auction days and preparations for Mother's Day in the United Kingdom and internationally. Last week, purchasing for Mother's Day in the UK was already in full swing. We clearly noticed this in the strong pricing for pink and pastel shades.

Be inspired at the Flora Spring Expo

The upcoming peak period calls for good preparation. It’s important to buy smartly, plan carefully and set clear expectations for your customers. The market moves quickly and demands flexibility.

A great way to get inspired is to visit the Flora Spring Expo on 18 and 19 March. This is Royal FloraHolland's new spring fair. It’s a moment to meet, do business and share knowledge. Experience and inspiration take central stage, and we auctioneers will be there aswell.

A glimpse into the world behind our flowers and plants

On 11 and 12 April, it will once again be time for 'Kom in de Kas'. A unique moment when consumers and professionals can discover what really happens behind the scenes at our growers.

It’s wonderful to see how transparency, craftsmanship and innovation come together there. It’s a great opportunity to let our sector shine. Whether you visit for yourself, your customers or your loved ones, it’s the perfect chance to experience up close just how much care and expertise go into growing a beautiful product. Be sure to ask questions when you’re there; growers are always happy to share their stories. In doing so, we can help make the chain a little more transparent together.

Here's to a colourful spring

I’m really looking forward to the weeks ahead. Every morning, the spring selection is a joy to see. Let's continue to use the beauty, colour and love of our flowers and plants to bring some balance to a world full of turmoil. If there’s one thing that connects people and brings joy, it’s our product.

Here's to a strong and colourful spring!
