Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) - International market parties and interest groups are working on a healthy, vigorous and sustainable floriculture industry together. The aim of the FSI is to ensure that by 2020, 90% of all flowers and plants, traded and produced by our members, is sustainable.

Versnellergroep op Duurzaamheid - Dutch Flower Group, Royal Lemkes, Waterdrinker and Royal FloraHolland signed a manifest in early 2017 to accelerate FSI. FleuraMetz also joined this initiative. In addition, we ensure transparent and reliable information about sustainability and certificates on our digital platform Floriday and on the various sales channels, including the clock. The construction of the necessary ICT links started in 2018.
international Corporate Social Responsibility (iCSR) - The goal of this covenant is to allow employees of African nurseries to make a proper living. We work with trade and branch organizations, social organizations, trade unions and the government to advance iCSR. This is reflected by the contribution to the establishment of the iCSR covenant for the floriculture industry. We encourage as many parties as possible to join and to execute the agreements in this covenant together.
Plastic Pact NL - The main goal of Plastic Pact NL is to reduce the single use of plastic packaging as much as possible by 2025. Royal FloraHolland contributes by increasing the sustainability of transport packaging through the use of less material, more recycling, by encouraging the use of multi-use packaging and to use bio-based plastic packaging wherever possible. Royal FloraHolland has set the following goals for 2025:
- Plastic products and packaging are made of 100% recyclable plastic
- We use 20% less plastic in 2025 compared to 2017
- At least 70% of all single-use plastic products and packaging that ends up in the trash in the Netherlands is recycled without loss of quality
- All single-use plastic products on the market will have to consist of at least 35% recycled plastic.
Platform Duurzame Sierteelt - This platform was founded by LTO Glaskracht, the VGB and Royal FloraHolland and works on solutions for issues that threaten the image of the products and the reputation of the sector together with all of the important chain partners of the Dutch floriculture industry. The result is a clear approach regarding sustainability and communication about this subject.
The Green City - The Green City expresses the pursuit of a more attractive, climate-resistant and healthier living environment. It is our ambition to encourage 'greener thinking' through education, highlighting successful practical examples and sharing new scientific insights. In the The Green Agenda program, knowledge institutions and entrepreneurs develop and test innovative green concepts and earning models.
International standard for Environmental footprint - In the floriculture industry there is not yet an international standard methodology to calculate environmental footprints. That is why Royal FloraHolland initiated a project together with GroentenFruit Huis and Wageningen Economic Research. The aim of this project was to create a uniform, chain-accepted standard for environmental footprint calculations for ornamental plants or flowers. We are aiming for international acceptance of the methodology. In the near future, this will allow us to meet needs of the sector, the government and retailers fully and consistently.
Keteninitiatief Transport Verpakkingen - By participating in the KIDV plans to make the sector more sustainable, we are testing our sustainable strategy with experts of the market. This strengthens our policy and leads to new insights and innovations.
